sos & cqd
This is my first time writing, so I hope you find it enjoyable.
There are many Titanic fans around the world, either real Titanic enthusiats, or fans of the film which came out a few years ago. From watching the film, many people believe that Titanic was the first ship to use SOS (Save Our Souls) which has been the international distress call since 1906. But did you know that it was actually first used in 1909. Three years before the Titanic sunk in 1912.
According to popular belief the Titanic was the first ship to use SOS, this is partly true, as the Titanic was the first British vessel to use it, however, it was first used by the S.S Arapahoe in 1909.
Prior to this the distress call was CQD (Come Quick Distress). Which was not an international distress signal, but a maritime distress call used by all telegraph operators of the Marconi Wireless Company since 1904.
When the Titanic struck the iceberg on the fateful night of April 14th 1912, They first sent out the CQD signal after 35 minutes, shortly after, SOS.
So, instead of being the first ship to use CQD and SOS, the Titanic was actually the first ship to use both maritime and international distress signals. |
